West Central Iowa Memory Walk Kicks Off

'Youth Parading for a Cure' in downtown Denison

Children of all ages are invited to join in kicking off planning for the Association’s 2007 West Central Iowa Memory Walk.

Youth Parading for a Cure will be the theme of a parade to be held in Downtown Denison on Thursday, May 17. The parade will begin at 5:00 pm at the corner of Broadway and Main, and youth are encouraged to assemble outside the Donna Reed Theatre before the event. This will be a non-motorized parade.

Walkers, bicyclists, pulled wagons and pushed strollers are all encouraged. Creativity and fun will be what this parade will be all about. Trumpets and kazoos are welcome. Job Corps Clowns will be entertaining people along the two-block parade route that ends at Hy-Vee. Youth can walk or ride in the parade in their street clothes, team uniform, dance costume or trick-or-treat outfit. Older youth will walk along the parade route with donation cans, allowing adults to make financial donations. The object will be to raise awareness of the Alzheimer’s disease and related disorders and collect some “pocket change” for the work done by the Association in this area.

At 6:00 pm the 2007 West Central Iowa Memory Walk planning committee will meet at Godfather’s Pizza in Denison. Coletta Weeda, Crawford County and Gene Tiefenthaler, Carroll County, co-chairs of this year’s walk, encourage anyone interested in helping in the walk to attend this organizational meeting. Committee assignments will be made and information on organizing a team for the walk will be provided.

The West Central Iowa Alzheimer’s Memory Walk will be held at Yellowsmoke Park in Denison on Saturday, September 8.

To join a team, start a team, walk as an individual, or support another walker, contact Gwen Ecklund at the Alzheimer’s Association branch office (800.272.3900).
